7 Reasons to Love Story Cards!
It’s 6 PM already and your phone rings again. The 100th time today. You almost refuse to pick up, but then you see the name on the screen. “Hubby“. When you answer, the sweetest voice calls you “Mummy, are you coming?” and you’ve melted completely like an ice-lolly on a hot, summer day.
This might have happened just once, but if you’re like I imagine you are, a hardworking, super-busy mum, it might as well be your day-to-day life. Which is awesome, it really is! You are growing, both professionally and personally, it seems like nothing can stop you.
However, there is something that you miss dearly, isn’t it?. You’d truly give up everything if you could just take your kids with you at work, not having to sacrifice family over the job. You miss those tiny hands around your neck every single moment. And, just as others would give up everything to have another cup of coffee, you’d do the same to spend some extra time with them.
I know how it feels.
Family-work balance seems like a fairytale.
Especially since this unprecedented pandemic hit us all and the worldwide lock-down has caught us completely unprepared. How do we manage our time? How do we home-school our kids, while spinning too many plates at once? It’s no wonder we’re so burnt out that we can’t actually spend some meaningful time with our children.
But this article is not about that balance. Because I truly believe that whatever it is that’s going to shape that harmony, you already have it in you. It’s so unique and individual, there just isn’t a one-size-fits-all recipe. I am not here to tell you that you should take time off from work or go on a family trip on weekends (although that would be great, too).
I am here to encourage you to make the most out of what you already have. Is it just 15 minutes in the evening to put your children to bed and kiss them good night? Is it in the morning, when you make breakfast together? Or maybe you manage to sneak out at lunchtime and pick up your children from school. Whatever your time is, just make it count!
They won’t remember the excuses, the rush of busy mornings, the tiredness in your eyes (ok, maybe just a little), but they sure will remember the time you spend together.
That’s exactly why I created these amazing printable Story flashcards that you can use literally anytime to make the most out of every chance you’ve got to spend time with your little ones. Here are some of the reasons I love them so much and I just KNOW you’ll love them too. The best part? They cost no more than a coffee!
1. Story cards are a great way to invent... stories
That doesn’t come as a surprise, does it? I specifically designed the Story flashcards to create fabulous narratives. Each time you pick a card, a new idea pops out. So let’s say for instance that you’ve picked “a frightened lion” as a character, “a volcano” as the setting, “a flying carpet” as a special ingredient and “sitting on a cup of tea” as the teaser (or the moment of action). Tadaa! I’ve actually made it easy for you right now because the story could sound something like this “There was once a frightened lion who sat on a cup of tea at the very top of an active volcano. Imagine the lion trembling at every babbling sound the volcano would make. But he ran out of tea one day, for being so frightened and shaking so heavily, so decided to take his flying carpet for a ride in the town to buy some more.” Hilarious, isn’t it? Now your children could ask you “mummy, but why was he sitting there in the first place if he had a flying carpet?” and that’s the funniest part. I’ll leave you with it. The “why’s” are my favourite part.
2. Take them with you on trips
Going on holiday with your kids has never been easier! If your little ones are not that little anymore and they get to read by themselves, then it’s actually even better, because you’ll get to listen to at least one of your favourite songs with your hubby while they get super busy weaving stories in the backseat of your car. If they’re not, it’s fun-time for the entire family! With 25 cards for each of the four sections, you’ll never get bored.
3. Story Cards enhance your children's imagination
Needless to say, the Story flashcards are a fantastic tool to nurture those little minds and really enhance imagination. It’s like having an imaginary magic wand, except that it’s way more interactive. Plus, you don’t risk being turned into a frog.
4. Bye-bye screen time
This is a real struggle, I know it. When your energy levels are so, so down, the temptation to just hand the tablet or your phone to your kids just so you can sit quietly for one hour, ahem! 5 minutes, is enormous. But in the long run, you won’t do anything good for them and you won’t be building a healthy relationship with them either. So why not cut up some story cards and just play for 10-15 minutes together? You get to deepen that connection with your children and they get their most-needed time with their mum. It’s a win-win!
5. Improve your child's vocabulary
It might take you a while to browse through all the cards, but you’ll see, once you’re getting in the habit of printing and cutting them out, your children will discover more and more words and concepts. It’s so empowering to see them learning while having so much fun, with no stress on your shoulders whatsoever.
6. Have sooo much fun
The Story Flashcards are sooo funny, I promise. The ways to turn a story into tremendous amusement are basically endless. You won’t even notice when time flies by and the next thing you know it’s bedtime already and you end up your day with such a fantastic energy.
7. You are building precious memories
I know you can do that basically anywhere and anytime when you have kids, isn’t it? I mean, each time they make a silly face or they ask a silly, yet meaningful question, they are building up your book of memories to keep and treasure. They are absolutely adorable (except for when they follow you to the toilet or when they use your make up as pencils – they’re.not.cute.then.period).
But the Story flashcards are an extra tool that can give you a hand whenever you’re not in the mood. When you feel like you might as well just hand over your tablet, remind yourself that you’re better than that. That is not to say that you’re a robot and you can’t take advantage of the technology when you need to – it is a great opportunity after all. But I bet you want to just spend some more time with them, breath in their sweet scent and enjoy a good laugh together. Story Cards are amazing to build up some precious memories that you can then recount over and over again.
You can either order the printable version, which you can print anytime. I strongly advise you use a solid paper, 200gsm will do perfectly. I’ve printed mine on 200gsm paper that I found on supermarket and they turned out beautifully.
Or you can have your own already-printed flashcards at your door, whatever works best for you.
I am oh, so super excited to be able to share them with you! I really, really hope you’ll make the most out of them! Feel free to leave a comment and tell me how it went, if your children like them, tell me a little bit about the stories that you came up to.
Until next time,
